Sustainability at Ndoyaa Garments
At Ndoyaa Garments, we take our role as a sustainable business seriously. We believe that in the 21st century, there is no place for businesses who ignore the need to protect our environment and communities.
Reduce, Recycle
Over the years, we have made continued improvements to lower the impact we have on the environment, right across our business. This has involved simple actions, like reducing the plastic we use at the factory by introducing water dispensers for staff instead of purchasing sachet water, but it has also proved a driving factor in creating our products.
As a clothing manufacturer, we deal with vast quantities of fabric every day. We source this fabric from local markets, keeping the miles our fabric has travelled to a minimum and supporting local traders in the process. Creating our Ankara dresses and batik shirts generates a lot of offcuts, which, instead of being sent for recycling elsewhere or discarded to landfill, get recycled in exciting and creative ways. We use these small end cuts to produce jewellery, aprons, pillowcases, and the design elements on some of our garments. This way, more of our fabric gets to enjoy a useful life.
Sustainable Work, Sustainable Wages
We pride ourselves on offering decent work, especially to those from our [local community] who are often in a precarious position when it comes to earning a wage for their family. Being able to offer training and a good job to those on our doorstep who show the aptitude for garment production means that those workers don’t have to travel long distances for employment.
Once at work, all our employees are treated fairly according to the statutes of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and all relevant local laws. We ensure our employees are paid through the banking system, limiting the chances of someone taking advantage of them for receiving their wages in cash.
Future Plans
We are constantly working to improve our sustainability credentials, and we are currently working on making our business and manufacturing processes fully compliant to gain accreditation from the International Organization for Standardization. Working with the ISO ensures that our processes have the UN’s sustainable development goals at their core, with a vision for improving the world around us in everything we achieve, and every garment we make.
